Hey guys, I built my PC...quite awhile ago. I am not a real PC guy, but wanted a decent gaming computer (at the time) for a fraction of the cost(thanks newegg). So head first I went with a GED and a can do attitude...I built my own PC -insert Dr Evil Laugh-. Well this was 7-8 years ago. I now want to upgrade my graphics card, but am sure I will need to upgrade other items as well. I will list my prehistoric build, and humbly await tech replies. Alas...I am not willing to give my back teeth on cost for the upgrades, more looking for things that will work for a 3-5 more years before I have to dabble in the world of skynet again. Again...my goal is to replace the Graphics card not every component.

Board is an ASR0ck Extreme 3 970
Graphics GEFORCE GTX660
8 Corsair Ram/ Dominator
Core AMD FX 8-Core Black edition
Power 950W SILENCER MKII
SSD 128gb M5S
I looked through the threads, but every build is different. I thank you guys for your time, and input.

Afaik, every time nvidia releases a new series, there's a decent temporary price drop on the prior series, because stores are trying to dump stock to make room on the shelves. Soon as they get a decent flow from the new cards the older generation goes back up to regular prices. Personally I'd follow all the advice, wait til the Volta arrive then get a 1060-6. With an FX cpu, your not going to get much use from the higher power cards like a 1070 or better, so you'll be pretty well topped out on performance with a 1060 or the Volta equivalent. Right now I think the best thing you could do is learn all you can about OC on that FX, it'll help considerably with higher fps demands when you do get the new card.
the 970 is a newish mb so any newer gpu will fit it. may want to make sure the mb has newest bios file it to keep any bios bugs from keeping new card from posting. on your power supply it a one 12v rail unit. so it take any of the newer gpu without any issues. if you can wait a bit i use my funds for a volta gpu. with the votlat gpu it should be a good card for a long time. the 10xx cards are not bad but if the voltage gpu are close to the old pascal gpu your going to get a newer and faster gpu for about the same cost.

Karadjgne, smorizio,SR-71 Blackbird, I thank you gentlemen for your replies. My approach and take will be the 1060-6, update my bios, and actually try to understand my overclock settings. All three of you averaged the same response and that is truly fantastic for me. I appreciate the time you guys took to reply. Thank you, enjoy your holidays.
