GPU usage at 90%+ and goes to 80-100 ºC when playing Path of Exile

Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Motherboard: Asus Prime B350-PLus, Socket AM4
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000MHZ 16GB (2x8)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 690 (dont know much more)

Been playing path of exile for a few years with no real fps issues, but recently its been rly bad.

I thought maybe there was an issue with the game, and thats why it was lagging. But i checked my taskbar and it uses 90-100% of my gpu.(which isnt all bad) but then i checked the temp, it hovered around 80 when idle and went up to 105 when actually playing the game, before i turned the game off..

Tried playing WoW and had no issues, but its not as graphic heavy as Path of Exile imo.
Can this still just be the game, or is it the gpu? Its pretty old and well used.

Have been thinking of getting a new card soon, but was hoping to wait for some sales..

Solution
What you're describing is generally caused by a graphics card malfunction (general failing or severe overheating); either a physical issue with the card itself, or a driver issue although driver issues generally yield blue screens.

Do you have another card you can try? It sounds like the 690 is failing. If I had it in my shop I would try running the 690 in the testbench and try to get it to black screen or freeze. It sounds like it's getting progressively worst and airflow+dust aren't the issue. The PC probably isn't the issue either that's a fairly new build.

Start by getting some canned air and dusting out your PC and blow into the graphics card, but don't blow too close. 80C on idle means the card is overheating badly. Over 100C is considered the zone where cards start to throttle and you will see it in your FPS. Compare your temps to after you have done this.

Ok, i will that, i did use some canned air to dust out the pc when i upgraded some of my parts, was about 6 months ago tho.

And when i said 80 when idle, i ment idle in game, when i dont have any games running its at around 40.

Im using CPUID HWMonitor to check temp (dunno how accurate it is)

but will try using some canned air and check again

Update:

I did what you said, and i dont notice any difference, still at around 80 in game when not doing anything, and goes up to 100 as soon as i start playing (i do play with skills that adds alot of particals so it might be pushing the card abit) but still, up to 100+?

There was abit of dust in the card, inside the "grill" part, idk what its called, under the fan but not like it covered up anything.

what do suggest i should do?

I'd first get HWMonitor just to make sure that it's a bad reading. If you are actually getting over 100C that bad on pretty much any card. 80C idle is ridiculous as well, it should be more like around 50C idle. It's the point where chips start to become damaged. If it still runs that hot after dusting the case and card out (vents, grills, fan), try running it with the case open and seeing in the temperatures come down. Could be airflow.

Ye im using HWMonitor to check the temp.
As of now its at 41C, not playing anything, just using chrome.

After playing around some more and tweaking settings abit, it hasnt gone over 90 in game.

I will try running it with the case open.

I lowered some graphic settings, opened up my case for better airflow like u said, might have helped. It still goes up to 90 and above at times but not up to 100.

But today i have been having an issue where my pc freezes up while playing, i can still hear sounds, but cant do anything, cant alt tad, ctlr alt delete or anything. have to force shut off. Idk if the gpu causes this or something else.

Everything else in my pc is pretty new and i havnt had this issue with these parts prior to today.

If the card is dusted out and the drivers (GPU, chipset) are all good and the card is still freezing like that I'd have to say the card is the most likely cause of the problem. It can't be confirmed without a test card or another system to try the card in, but card failing is the most likely cause I think. There's a small chance it could be the power supply but without spare parts it couldn't be confirmed.

Ye i dont know. It wasnt crashing super often, like 3 times within a few hours.

I could try reinstalling or updating anything that isnt on the latest update tomorrow and see if i notice anything.

But as its the first time its happening, while i have been having issues with temp and fps. its probly safe to say the card is on its last few straws.

Recent patch really affected performance negatively especially in cities with players with shiny mtx on them. My suggestion would be turning on v-sync if you haven't could effect the performance but would decrease the load on your gpu.

Ye i have heard the patch messed something up, saw a post about changing ur physX settings. I did put all graphic settings down and using vsync, its slightly better.

Should be fine to last me a couple more weeks while i wait for some deals on a gpu :)
