I have a msi z170a g45 motherboard with the 1151 socket for intel it takes the gen 6 intel I have been given a gen 7 intel i5 7500 cpu my friend can't get it to work on hus system he says he does not get a picture and says the cpu is defective I think his graphics card is bad or a issue on his motherboard. My question is if know it's a gen 7 cpu and my board is from gen 6 but the guy I purchased it from told me that he was running gen 7 intel cpu on it he only got rid of it for a amd setup so how can I tell if I need to do a bios update after I put the cpu in my board. This is my first build ever

OK I will do that when i get the cpu in the mail it's coming from the US I live in Germany so a few days I hope

Ah, so you don't have any CPU now? Well, that's different story. In this case, there are two scenarios. Either when you install CPU all works - which means your board has correct BIOS; or you get no display - which means your board has older BIOS (or CPU is faulty), in which case you would need 6th gen CPU to update BIOS.

OK I don't have a cpu installed right now I was looking to buy one and my friend had his defect intel i5 7500 cpu that he can't get to work in his system I am not going to tell him I think it's not defect and I think something eles is wrong with his system but from what my booklet says and boxn says my motherboard is set from factory with gen 6 intel chips set

Yeah like I said the guy I purchased the motherboard from says he was running the newest cpu for it which was gen 7 and the gen 8 just came out so when I get it is will find out if he was right.

If he indeed was running 7th gen CPU on it, then you're ok.

I really hope that's the case because it will be nice to not have to buy a cpu and I could take the money towards ddr4 ram

The reason my friend says itshe defective is with the cpu installed he does not get a picture so I hope it's is a fully working cpu and just a error on his part

What motherboard your friend has? Maybe he was trying to use the CPU on 6th gen board without proper BIOS version.
