Upgrading CPU and GPU

Hello all. Currently running an i7-4770k, 8GB DDR3 SDRAM, and a GTX 780. If it's relevant, power supply is a Corsair HX1050. System is three years old, as you can likely tell, but I haven't had too much trouble running newer games on it until I started up Assassin's Creed: Origins, which I'm running at about high 20's FPS at moderately high settings at 1440p. I feel it's probably an appropriate time to upgrade.

Have been looking at a 1080Ti, since, to my understanding, that's the best non-Titan card available, but I suppose my processor may very well need an upgrade, as well, if I am to see proper improvement in performance? I don't know as much about components and such as I should, so I'm asking for thoughts and advice on upgrade components. If I get a GPU, I definitely want to go with the 1080Ti, but not sure about CPU, or if I need to upgrade that, or anything else, at all.

@ 1440p a 1080 TI is the only card that can come close to locking 60+FPS... and even it struggles now. You CPU is quite good so no need to reinvest there.

Yeah I've read about the many performance issues people have had with the game, but I've also seen people that have been able to play it without issues, so I'm not sure. Also meaning to play The Witcher III, and more in the future, of course, so even if AC:O still runs like crap, the upgrade will help something. Surprised the CPU is still good enough, but that's good news--at least I don't have to spring for a new one right now.

The 1080Ti is a good buy, right now, then, since I can't swing a Titan? Is there a specific model of the 1080Ti that is preferrable? Also heard NVIDIA has new cards coming out sometime soon but wasn't sure what to make of it.
