Transfer files between two computers using modem?

I have a very old Windows 95 PC with some large files that I want to transfer to a newer computer for backup. However, the files are too large for floppy disks and this version of Windows 95 did not have USB support at all so I can't just use a flash drive unfortunately. There's also no Ethernet port, just a standard 56k dialup modem in it. So is there any way to transfer files between 2 computers using a dial up connection/modem? I know with Ethernet you could FTP between 2 computers, but is there anything like that with modems?

My thought would be to purchase a IDE/SATA to USB adapter (with separate power supply) or even an external drive case to connect and/or hold the old Windows 95 drive.

Then connect to the adapter/box USB plug to USB port on the new computer.

Should appear as another drive on the new computer and allow you to transfer the files quite readily.

Any you can always used the USB adapter/box again in the future.

Google "ide/sata to usb adapter".

Many products available. Just verify the specific connections you need. Good chance that a local big box store will have the necessary adapters or boxes.

Also many "how to" tutorials that will help you plan out the setup and process you require.

Why wouldn't you just remove the hard disk from the PC in question and get an adapter to USB so you could read it on another computer? IDE to USB is about ten bucks or less.

Without using the modem at all you use a serial cable to transfer data, but really, this takes way too much time.

Because this particular computer was compressed using DriveSpace3 and plugging it into a modern computer to read the files directly doesn't seem possible since the actual OS partition doesn't seem to be accessible from any file explorers or disk management tools.

You failed to mention that. In that case, add a second IDE drive and copy the uncompressed files over to it. use the same method I mentioned above.

I would go to my junk drawer, pull out a compact flash card (IDE pin compatible) stick it into the full size IDE adapter, copy the files to it and then read them from a card reader in a win 10 machine.

If you want to transfer by modem, zip them up, dial the internet and up load them to an FTP.

If you want to transfer by serial cable, get a nullmodem cable, attach the two computers (sender and receiver) via serial port and begin the transfer process using whatever terminal software remains for such activities.
