Big movie collection storage

I collect movies and rip them to my external hard drive (4tb).
But as my collection (now 3+ TB) is growing I'm going to need a bigger solution in the near future.

I only write the movies once, then index them.
After that I usually use the drive about once a day watching movies.

What could be an useful storage device?
A NAS would be overkill I think, I only use the drive at night and then it would be quite the waste of electricity to power it 24/7 just for those 2/3 hours.
Preferably something that is fail-safe as I prefer not to have to re-rip everything.

Solution
NAS devices have USB (or eSATA) ports that can be used to back them up. The two Synology units that I linked would be a good choice. The "play" unit would probably be better for you since you may have to transcode.

Ooh okay I didn't know that a NAS would go into idle, that's good to know.
Anyway as you say RAID 1 isn't a good backup solution, is there software available to run let's say 2 NAS drives that are used as NAS storage and 2 normal drives that only get turned on when making a backup?

Is it also perhaps possible to (if I have a 4 bay nas) use 2 bays as backup? So to say that those are always off and only turn on once a week or month to backup?

If not, a usb docking station with an internal drive in it can easily be used instead of an external usb drive?
(Can't find any good 1-drive 12tb external drives)

Really thanks for the help ;D
