I still haven't taken advantage of SSD Technology... I am about to purchase my first...

I currently have a Asus crosshair V Formula Z, I'm thinking of getting the Samsung SM961 256GB due to its low price tag... eventually I want to upgrade my AMD setup to an intel setup.... that means a new motherboard... In the mean time I have to focus on an m.2 adapter.
Focusing now on the adapter, what should I look for in a m.2 adapter? will some out preform others?

Once I upgrade my Mobo, we now have boards with m.2 ultra, so what gets us ultimate performance? the m.2 cards, are they compatible with m.2 ultra? Is the PCIe adapter not a good route anymore? and what ever happened to using a SSD with Sata? I'm sure m.2 is faster cause all benchmarks I have read points that route.

The question is what should my long-term plan be for my SSD? m.2, m.2 ultra, or a m.2 adapter?
I read somewhere that most m.2 can't take advantage of m.2 ultra yet? Something about:
standard M.2 is PCIe 2.0 x2
m.2 ultra is PCIe 3.0 x4

Do you actually have a use for NVME SSD speeds though?
Otherwise just any SSD, even sata, will be a huge "performance" increase.
Adapters for m.2 are only used if you don't have any m.2 ports (many modern ones have 2, at least 1).
Also if your motherboard doesn't fully support NVME SSDs it's generally not a great idea to try and use one with them, and since you have an old old amd one, it's not going to work likely.
