So I got a free HP 8300 Elite SFF PC (https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-compaq-elite-8300-core-i7-3770-3-4-ghz-monitor-none-series/specs/) for free that I'm trying to upgrade into a decent gaming PC for my girlfriend. Right now she uses it stock (upgraded to win10) and plays wow but its too laggy for raiding, and am hoping to use parts I already have.
I have a GTX 670 that I'm planning on putting into it.
The 8300 is a Small Form Factor PC, so I have a full size tower to put everything.
First, the PSU that I am going to replace the small stock PSU is an older 500W PSU, the only problem is that there isn't any 6 slot PCI connectors. I know that they sell molex to 6-pin adapters, but I've heard that can damage the PSU and other components, is this true? I would much rather spend $5 on an adapter than buy a new PSU.
Second, the motherboard is a Q77 Express Chipset, (https://ark.intel.com/products/64027/Intel-Q77-Express-Chipset) this only supports PCIE 2.0 not 3.0, and only has x4 not x16. I haven't been able to fully understand if this will support the GPU but from what I've gathered it will. If it does work, will this bottleneck the performance alot? And if it does, how much performance would I lose from having a new motherboard.
My bad if I'm missing anything that I should have put. Anything else about the system I feel is irrelevant, but if I missed anything important please ask.
Thanks in advance.
