Can't figure out if my PC can perform better / How to improve PC's Performance

Hello,

I have been stumped by my computer's performance ever since I built it almost year ago on December 23rd 2016. It has done a good job and I am happy with it, but I am a bit underwhelmed.

Here are the specs:
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A
CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K @3.50ghz (Overclocked to 4.2ghz)
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 1070
Drive: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Monitor: Asus VG248QE (144Hz)

I use this computer for gaming and for homework (surfing the web, Word), emphasis on gaming, and I feel that while it is giving me good FPS in games, it can be significantly higher. For example, I mostly play Overwatch, and I have set ALL of my settings to the lowest possible, and I am sometimes dropping below 144 FPS during fights. I would like to get to a point where I can set a few settings higher and achieve a consistent framerate that is well above 144 FPS, but the latter is more important.

I have tried so many different things throughout the year in an attempt to optimize my PC, but to no avail, so I am open to upgrading parts if they are significantly holding the performance back. Do you think it is a problem that I don't have dual channel RAM? Could upgrading to an i7 processor (like the i7-7700K) increase the FPS significantly enough?

Please help. Thank you

Solution
Dual channel RAM or lack thereof can make a big difference if the game is affected by memory throughput, yes.

I've never build a modern system without a dual channel kit.

The thing is every game is different, some might get CPU bound, but at 144Hz? Usually you get GPU bound. I know the 1070 is a great GPU, I mean I have some here, but really it's only about a 1/3rd faster than the midrange cards and most of them are pulling 100 fps in FPS games with only slightly lower minimums.

The 1080Ti is a beast of a card of course, but it has a beastly price too thanks to the lack of any and all competition.

Thank you for the response. Anyways, I just feel like the 1070 is not the problem because I know somebody with a 970 and an i7-4790K, and they have better FPS in Overwatch than me.

I know that they once told me they are also on all-low settings, conveniently. I know it sounds fake but I promise they said that haha

Yeah, I dunno.

If you have a couple days over the holiday, try this..
Benchmark your PC as it is right now with whatever gaming benchmark tool you choose
get a small sucky harddrive, put aside your current disks entirely (disconnect them I mean).
Update the BIOS of your motherboard.
Install a fresh windows from new media and don't let it connect to the internet yet
Install the drivers you already had downloaded and ready to go (Intel, Nvidia, Sound driver from the realtek site)
Connect to the internet and let it do it's update thing
Install the previous benchmark and test.

Is there a difference? how much?

Alright, I will try that suggestion soon if I can, thank you.

For now, I have benchmarked my PC several times here: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/6361425
The results have seemed to show the same thing each and every time: my graphics card and CPU are performing nicely, along with everything else but my memory, which seems very slow. This is what lead me to believe that while the memory is not as significant as a CPU or graphics card when it comes to gaming performance, surely getting faster memory would help a lot (Dual Channel, 3000+ mhz maybe?). I have tried virtually every PC optimization trick I could find on the internet, so I feel the need to upgrade something, and the memory seems like it's not pulling its weight.

Side note: I have heard from several (unprofessional) sources that claim memory is more important in Overwatch than it is in other games, which also strengthens my thoughts about memory.

I will also look into OCing my current RAM if I have the time. In conclusion, do you think my RAM is holding me back? Could upgrading to Dual Channel RAM with higher MHz give me better performance?

Thank you for your input, it is very valuable to me. Have a good day!
