Only the GPU will work without the manufacturer's driver - - this allows you to see the OS installation screens - - after OS installation you have to install the manufacturer's GPU driver in order to obtain the correct display resolution and other graphics-related features.
None of the other devices (eg sound, network devices etc) will work at all until you install the manufacturer's drivers.
