No sound with VGA to HDMI + audio in converter?

Bought a VGA to HDMI converter adapter with additional plugins for DC/5V and Audio in. Plugging my old Tecra into my TV with it works for video, but not audio. In Playback Devices, HDMI is shown as "not plugged in" and setting Realtek Speakers as default does not help.

What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a driver? I did use Driver Booster Pro to no avail, and a typical HDMI connection from another machine to that television works fine.

Solution
"HDMI is shown as "not plugged in". It's correct, since using the VGA from Tecra.
"and setting Realtek Speakers as default does not help." Have you connected the audio in on converter to the audio out on Tecra?
If yes, and still no go, it could be either the converter, or the HDMI cable.

Thank you (duh)! I'm still waking up... was plugging the audio cable from the converter directly into the TV expecting sparks to fly...
