I was looking to buy a new ssd and finally upgrade to windows 10(but i really dont wanna spend 100 bucks for windows)
I have a Asus z170 board and i was really just wanting to know which SDD even if it has to be the normal ones is best for this Motherboard.

I tried userbenchmark and got a pretty bad rating on my SSD

You can use pretty much any SSD you want, what's better is more of a personal preference. I can't tell you which you will consider the best really.
A 960 like you mentioned is definitely a lot faster, but you may not notice it all that much in the real world.

The Samsung drives have dominated for ages because nothing else has really matched them, so go for an 850 evo if you want to save some money or a 960 pro if you wan the fastest, or just stick with what you have because it may be that you won't notice a difference. The intel 600P might be worth a look too - slower than the 960 and faster than the 850 and in between in price (at least here it is) and intel have a good reputation for reliability.

I just use the M.2 850 evo on mine, not as fast as an NVME SSD but honestly for an average user you wouldn't know the difference.
What SSD do you have? unless it's a really slow one you may not notice much improvement from a new one.

Also although officially the free windows upgrade has ended I believe it's still possible to do a clean install and use a windows 7 or 8 key. You can certainly still use the media creation tool to make a bootable CD or USB installation tool and give it a try without needing to spend anything. If it doesn't work you can always revert back or buy a key.
