PC Build for 1080p & VR

Im buying my buddy's computer and want to make sure it can handle 1080p high-ultra gaming and VR.

These are the main components

CPU: I7 4790K
GPU: GTX 970
RAM: 16gb DDR3

I plan to later upgrade to
Ryzen 1700x
GTX 1070 ti
16gb DDR4 3000mhz

Just curious on what itll be able to handle until then.

Might not be enough for VR, depends on the title but most recommendations I've seen are for a 1060 or better which is equivalent to a 980.
Should game well at 1080p, I have a 980 and an oculus rift and it handles all of what you want very well - but it's a step up from the 970.

Obviously you will also need a motherboard for your planned upgrade.
