So I'm making a new build but ram seems to be the biggest problem. I'm thinking of getting 1 stick of 16 gb of ram because two sticks of 8 is much more expensive. But I want to know how much I will be losing on.

Solution

General snappiness of opening up folders and somewhat longer startup times. On games, they make a small 1-5 FPS difference depending if your gpu and cpu can handle the game. My roommate is running on a single stick with a ryzen 7 1700 16gb and a rx 480 8gb. 60fps max settings(fxaa on, gameworks off) 1080p. The slowest things on the system seems to be opening up basic programs. It should not be an issue unless you’re heavily using photoshop for high end tasks. And my roommate is running his ram at 2133 still

That's a really bad idea, since DDR3 getting unmatched sticks to work together has been getting more into the world of pot luck, DDR4 is more picky than DDR3 (DDR2 was ok).

So if you go down this route of buying 1 16GB stick with the intent of getting another later you'll have to buy 2 later to be sure that they'll work together. In the meantime you'll have 50-60% of the bandwidth.

I wouldn’t say so, on my last system I never had problems with 2 different brands. I did that with 2 systems I have and overclocked the ram with lower timings 1866 9cas. The ram supported speed was 1600 10 cas. Like I said the speed is only an issue if you’re doing some ram intensive tasks such as photoshop. Gaming is a non factor. My roommate gets 60fps+ max settings with a ryzen which is super ram sensitive and he’s doing completely fine with outdated bios(before ram fix)
