Hi,

Can i use a 4 pin cpu connetor on this motherboard, despite it having 8 pin?

My PSU only has 4 pin and i plan to put there a Ryzen 3 1200.

Thanks in advance!

Solution
Yes and no. Yes, electrically it should work, especially since it is only a 65W chip. No, because any PSU that only has a 4-pin CPU connector may be of sufficiently low-quality (if only due to its age) that it might not be safe to use in any computer. What is the brand and model (not just wattage) of that PSU? Depending on the graphics card you will be using, a good modern PSU may only cost $45-$50.

If you do use what you have, you will plug the four pins into either END of the 8-pin connector, not the middle.

I found your PSU at http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page2438.htm. It's made by CWT, which I'd say means it isn't hopeless, although CWT has made some models that I (and other experienced builders) would not use unless we had no choice. Since it has no PCIe power cables (used by high-end graphics cards), it is probably a very old model. Yours has only a two-year warranty, which likely places it solidly in that class. My suspicion is that it would be ranked on "Tier-4" of the listing at http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html. That list, like similar ones you may have seen, is not perfect, does not include many PSUs, and has room for niggling; however as a general guide it is still quite useful; relying on it you may not make the best choice, but you won't make a bad one. If you will be using a graphics card that needs a PCIe power cable, you will want to replace this PSU sooner rather than later, as adapters are often not safe to use; your unit does appear to have 432W available on +12V, so it appears to actually have sufficient power available for a graphics card.
