2 almost identical computers, both using Ethernet, have drastically different internet speeds

Hello,

I have 2 computers both plugged in using identical ethernet cords, both running windows 10 pro 64 bit but they have drastically different internet speeds. I have tried everything I can think of and I cannot improve the speed of the other computer.

I have a gig speed from RCN in Boston and the good computer gets 700-800 mbps while the slower computer gets between 30 - 50 mbps but can spike up to 200, still nowhere near the other computer. I tried everything I could think of to improve the speed, even trying to do speed tests in safe mode (with networking of course) and I even wiped it clean and it is still getting slow speeds.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Try iperf between the machines running each as the client or server and see if the results are different. This is a very simplistic program that is not affected by the disk, memory or even the CPU.

There are public IPERF servers that you can transfer data from also, it is a somewhat different test than speedtest since speedtest is using parts of the browser. This is partially why you must use the beta speed test because the old flash ones limited the top speed.

I don't think it is a hardware issue. I should have put this information in my original post. After I wiped the computer it was getting 300+ but after all the windows 10 updates it again dropped down to 30ish. I guess it still wasn't as much as my other computer, but it significantly dropped after all the windows 10 updates. I will try hardware still though.

If windows 10 did it try the ethernet driver from the chipset manufacture. You could also try the motherboard manufacture drivers.

There is a option in windows 10 to not update the drivers....I forget where ....but I know win10 used to mess up my video drivers so bad I got black screen on reboot. Almost had to reinstall the OS.

I downloaded the latest driver and it is still happening. Just checked the speed again on testmy.net and still getting 32.9 download.

I also checked the drive using realteks diagnostic tool and everything seems to be ok.

It is the gateway from RCN, plugged directly in. I have attempted to use different ports in the back of the gateway but the bad computer still gets the bad speed regardless of which one it is plugged into, and the good computer gets the good speeds regardless of the port it is plugged into.

I just installed a new PCIe ethernet card into the bad computer and it is still getting 30 mbps.
