I am getting ready to replace an old msi 760gma-p34 motherboard and AMD FX6350 CPU for the new Ryzen 1500x and an Asrock fatal1ty k4 motherboard. What are the steps I should take before and after the switch? Should I expect to install Windows 10 again, and do I need any drivers/bios updates?

Thanks

Forget the W7 disk. Just use W10 from now on. W7 is de-activated once you have used its key to upgrade.

If Win10 is activated and hasn't been used on another system, it should accept a new activation with the new board.
Yes, you should do a clean install of Win10 on the enw board. That is important for best results even if, by chance, you get the system to boot to the desktop using the old installation.

Are you using disk or flash drive for installation?

I will be using a copy of Windows 7 I bought originally for my build in 2014, and have since upgraded to Windows 10 via the offer Microsoft gave. So a disk yes

Luckily for me I have already linked my account to the licensed copy of Windows on my device. A clean install of Windows should be my course of action then, before i install the new gear. Thanks!

So, you're saying you had W7 upgraded to W10 on the old system, and now you want to clean install the W10 OS on the new build?
If so, download the Win10 installation pgm. from Microsoft using the media creation tool. Install it and use the W7 key to activate it. It should recognize the old key that you used for the W10 upgrade from Win7.

Ok. So to clarify, before I install the new motherboard, cpu, ram, etc I should follow the aforementioned steps for the clean Windows install?

If your license is linked, you should not need your old Win 7 license.
Follow the steps above.

For the OS install, again, read through the other link above.

I posted before you told me that you had W10 linked to your account. I never do that, so that is why I told you the 'other' way to do it. But if you have it linked, follow the Mod's advice.
And no, put the system together first, then install the OS.

Ok cool, thanks a million. Also, would you guys recommend just using the original windows 7 disk for the install or just use the media installer and boot from the usb?

One thing you may notice if you use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to create a USB Flash Drive installer...
When the first re-boot occurs, the system may run the installation pgm again instead of moving on to the next part of the install. I think this happens because it is based on a disk-based install that would normally be asking you to "press any key to boot from disk". But since ther's no disk (just the flash drive), it simply re-boots from the flash drive all over again.

If this happens to you, simply remove the flash drive before it completes the POST part of the startup. The install pgm should continue normally.
