Need a couple more 4gb dimms to go with my 8gb. I have 8gb g.skill ares 1866mhz. They sell for up to $150 used where as the same one in 1600mhz is 50-80$. What's the deal? The two have different timings so I don't want the 1600mhz.

More chips doesn't mean faster. Your motherboard is most likely running Dual Channel memory so with 4 chips is going to still run Dual. Don't worry too much about getting more than 16GB of ram unless your doing serious video editing or something. For gaming 16GB is plenty for even the newest games out right now.

That's my plan. The question is with the price discrepency. The 1866 is typically triple the price of the 1600 for g.skill ares and that seems ridiculous.

Yeah the prices for older DDR3 memory are crazy. I'd suggest just going with lowest price you can find. Don't worry about memory speed too much because it the speed increase isn't that amazing. Not as much as an increase in total memory would be. I just looked at Newegg and saw this one at decent price. G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL

I'm okay with 1600mhz. In benchmarks 1600-1866 seems to he the sweet spot. Problem is the same ram but 1600mhz is different timings than my 1866mhz. I don't want to mix timings. I'll probably end up buying 4x8gb of a different brand for the same price.
