I installed a Dual Core processor in what used to be a single core system, and now on boot I get the BSOD 0x0D1, however I can boot in safe mode. Is there some registry key I can edit to fix this?

Solution
Your E8400 is supported.
Being able to boot in safe mode indicates a driver issue.
You might want to reinstall the chipset drivers for the motherboard.
If you can do so in safe mode, that is best.

As a possible temporary bypass, you could reduce the core count to 1.
In msconfig boot advanced options set the tread count to 1.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect.

Reducing the core count in MSconfig won't let him use the power of the 8600. I would boot into safe mode and delete the CPU drivers, and the unicore driver under computer in the device manager. When he reboots windows *should* load new drivers for the CPU and everything should be good.
