Wide Top Case Fans Putting Downward Pressure On CPU 8-Pin Power Socket

I have 140mm fans at the top of my case, and they come into contact with the CPU 8-pin power socket at the top of the motherboard. There is enough room to have the socket plugged in, but the socket is right up against the edge of the fan and is applying slight downward pressure on the socket (the fan is always pressing down on the “locking” mechanism). The problem is the “locking” mechanism on the socket - if the locking mechanism didn’t stick up a couple of millimeters, there would be no problem at all.

Is this a problem, and is here something I can do? Can I get rid of the locking mechanism, perhaps file it down a little bit? It doesn’t seem like it is enough pressure to break anything, but I am not sure how durable that 8-pin plug is. Thanks!

I wouldn't want to trim the locking tab as it may make it near impossible to remove the connector later without it. But don't be afraid to trim the plastic shroud of the fan using a sharp hobby knife, dremel tool or even wire cutters. I had to trim a notch in the fan shroud for it to clear the CPUFan header and allow me to attach it.
