So I want to build my first machine. I've never done it or even watched someone do it ( except for some youtube videos) but some friends know how to. One of my buddies just made a first try list of hardware. What do you guys think, any suggestions?

Motherboard : Gigabyte Z370P D3

CPU : Intel I5 8400

GPU : MSI GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G

PSU : CORSAIR RM550X

COOLER : CRYORIG H7

CASE : NZXT S340

DISKS : SSD 850 EVO 250GB
I'll probably add a hdd afterwards

RAM : CRUCIAL 16GB DDR4 2666

let me know what you think! remember, I'm new to this, so any commentary is more than welcome!

Thanks, take care, and happy holidays!

Looks like a solid build.

Since you aren't overclocking there isn't much reason to spend more on the motherboard. So, the one you have is good.

You don't need the Cryorig H7. The CPU already includes an adequate cooler. The only reason for the Cryorig in your build is for it to be quieter or for looks. Personally, I'd take that money and change the 250GB Samsung Evo to a 500GB Samsung Evo. Then you can store more than a few games on the SSD. SSD make a huge difference in load time.

I believe that you should consider a cheaper motherboard since you aren't going to OC.
That Cryorig is a bit over since you aren't going to OC your Processer, the stock cooler is more than enough.I believe that you won't have any problems with the little noise of Stock Cooler.
You can get a Zotac GTX 1070 Amp Extreme! Or Asus Rog Strix Instead of Msi if it's the same price(or for cheaper) as Msi
You should rather spend the money on a GTX 1080 or just save it.
Rest your PC is Nice!
Good Luck!

Hi there,
To go any cheaper on the motherboard is very difficult. If you want a 8th gen cpu (coffee lake) then you will need a compatible chipset Z370 ( only compatible chipset so far ). The Gigabyte Z370P D3 comes at a price of €96 which is the cheapest z370 I could find.

As for the graphics card( gpu ) the msi gtx 1070 gaming x 8 G is way cheaper then the other 2 you propose (at least in our retail stores in Belgium). The asus comes up +€26 higher in price and the zotac +€77 compared to the msi. I know the asus and zotac have a higher clock speed but is it worth the extra money ?

The total build has a price tag of €1,207.24 ( £1,071.82 )

You don't need to change anything. Not worth it. Your build is good. You can always overclock your GPU the same as any of the others. The factory overclocks are there for the disinclined.

I think that poster was just looking at US pricing when making suggestions for cheaper parts.
