Will Upgrading My CPU increase my Max Amount of Ram on PC?

I have a Sony VAIO VGC RG54G PC that originally had Windows XP on it but doesn't have a HDD anymore. It had 2 sticks of 512MB of DDR2 RAM totaling in 1GB of RAM. I bought 2 sticks of 2GB of DDR2 RAM on Amazon that said specifically that it would work on this exact PC, but it isn't compatible at all. I tried all the combinations with putting the RAM in all the ports. I even tried putting 1 stick of 2GB RAM in, but that didn't work. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OSDJAW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 After buying the RAM I researched and found out that the max RAM for this system is 2GB and that the max RAM per slot is 1GB and it has 2 banks with 2 slots in each totaling in 4. It has a Intel Pentium(R) D 2.80 GHz right now, but I bought a new processor for it. It's an Intel Core 2 Duo https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009AG2YJ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I'm running it with Linux Mint Mate off a DVD and I entered a line into the terminal that told me what my max RAM is and it said 4GB (This is with the old Pentium D processor still) even though I read that 2GB is the max. What I want to know is, Will installing the new cpu allow me to use the new RAM I bought for it or will it make now difference and should I return both of them? Also which ports do I install the ram into to make it work and should it work with one 2GB stick? Thanks for any responses.

The Pentium D is a 64bit CPU. I doubt a Core 2 Duo would make a difference. You'd stand a better chance getting a 4x1GB DDR2 kit. They are less than $10 on eBay. The 945 chipset on that motherboard should support up to 4GB. Unless they did something in the BIOS to prevent addressing more RAM. The original 2GB limit is likely because only 512MB modules were available when it was designed.

Make sure they are 240 pin, non-ECC and unbuffered. It shouldn't matter if they are 667mhz or 800mhz.

Stick with Samsung, Toshiba, Crucial (Micron) or Hynix modules. They will meet JEDEC standards.

If 4GB will work. Then this should. It'll just run at 533mhz...
Sony VAIO VGC RG54G PC does not seem to be a valid model number. Maybe you have a link to it.

Generally, it is not a good idea to mix old memory with new memory. Since the old memory has never been tested with the new memory there is no guarantee they will work together.

The Amazon listing does have a valid model number. Here are some supported CPUs for the Intel 945P Chipset. Intel Core 2 Duo needs a newer model Chipset to work.

The link you put doesn't work. And I'm not combining the new and old RAM, I'm only using the new RAM. The socket for my current CPU, Pentium D, is the same as the Core 2 Duo. Also I got it to work with 1 stick of the 2GB RAM right now.

The 775 chipset ran for a long time. But it was mostly only backwards compatible. You have to copy and paste the link. The parenthesis in the address throw off the hyperlink.

These are the chipset compatible models.

Why would a 4X1GB kit work if a 2X2GB kit doesn't work? Also I got my PC to work with 1X2GB and 2X512MB totaling in 3GB of RAM, but 4GB still doesn't work and I also tried 5GB but it didn't work.

In the time of the 775 mobo's, ddr2 came in a couple of different varieties, namely high and low density IC's. Almost all Intel boards needed to use single sided, low density ram, which was most common on the 1Gb modules, the 2Gb modules were most commonly double sided, low density or single sided high density, which worked well for amd or Mac. The chances nowadays of finding 2Gb single sided, low density ram that is Intel compatible are beyond slim. You could use a single stick of 2Gb high density, but if you wanted to run 4Gb it had to be low density.

Could you add a link to some RAM that would work on either Ebay or Amazon? Also I had double sided RAM. Would it work to use 1X2GB Double sided and 2X1GB single sided? or 4X1GB single sided?

Would this processor make any difference https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Celeron-3-20Ghz-533Mhz-BX80552352/dp/B000LOVX8I/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1514095127&sr=8-7&keywords=intel+celeron+d Will any of the cpu's listed on that website make a difference?
