Recently I purchased a gtx 980 g1 edition which requires 600w, I have a vs550w corsair power supply and I have connected all 16pins necessary. When I boot up my pc the fans are quite loud on the graphics card. Is there a fix for this or is my gpu dead?

Solution

Thanks for all the help but I am now 99% sure I was scammed . I sent him a message just saying about how its not working and about 5mins after I had not received a reply and he has deleted his profile. Again I appreciate your help and hope you have a great christmas.

Thanks all,
Jack

p.s how do I end this thread?

If you don't have any problems with gpu performance as expected your gpu isn't dead.In the other hand if the fans are quite loud that means the gpu clock speed is very up considering the normal clock speed or your gpu is just very forced for many reasons. It might be your motherboard the problem.

What does this mean? It makes absolutely no sense.

Not even close, it means the card isn't getting past the post phase for the BIOS in order to be able to ramp it's fans down.

The drive has no effect on this situation, some 1TB drives are slower than what he has.

Is this a bot? because it's just all nonsense.

bip bip bop bip.

And about the drive for some reason I thought I saw 500GB so my bad.The other thing I said is if your gpu performance is good that means your gpu isn't dead and bu that I mean that if his gpu is working good and does the thing it has to do it isn't dead and the problem is one the fans only. But about the fans you are right.Second thing...ok.....man calm down I'm getting used to the tech kind of thing ok I try to learn how to do sh1** you know.Well its not bad you correct me.Because it will help me and the other guy too.Well I assume you are an expert so.......but next time talk more kindley man that sh1** hurts boi.I say what I know from my gaming experience all this years :) <3

So I updated to the bios and set the pcie as primary gpu, however I still do not have any display from my graphics card. I have noticed that the fans are not as loud now that i have updated the bios. Is there anything else I could try to get the card to output a display? I have tried hdmi and dvi on the graphics card but none of them produce a display. Another thing I noticed is that the windforce logo on the card is lit up in red even though i'm sure that its supposed to be white. This is a second hand card which I purchased of someone yesterday. When I try my brothers gtx 1060 3gb the pc boots up happily. Thanks for everyones help so far :D

It doesn't even display?
Ok well the problem with the fans is solved. It is not displaying so we have to target your monitor. But first you have to ask the man who gave it to you if the card had any of those problems in first hand and if your monitor is compatible with the card and if not what output it needs to display. He might suggest you to take an adapter.(B.C. one adapter can take dvi and convert it to hdmi).

That's actually good progress , I think the windforce logo is red initially and changeable once it boots via software.

Pretty sure the default output should be auto detected, just to be clear, your monitor is directly hooked up via HDMI or DVI with no adapters? What monitor is it?

At this point it sounds like the card is starting

Ok thats good to hear,

The card is connected directly to my tv with hdmi. My TV is a celsus 21.5 inch tv. I also tried my brothers monitor but still no luck. (My brothers monitor is a dell monitor which uses dvi.)

Before purchasing the item of him I asked him if the card worked well and he said he had never had any issues. He said that he ran it of a 750w psu.

As you said, I should message the guy about it so I went on Facebook to message him but to my surprise it seems that he has removed me from the chat, and I couldn't find him on facebook when searching his name. But when I go back to where I had found the listing for the gtx 980, His profile is now completely different. His name is completely different to the one before(NOT AT ALL SIMILAR TO HIS PREVIOUS NAME), his profile picture has changed and also has changed all of his info. It seems like he's trying to hide from me. This is what's leading me to believing he has scammed me.

Well I will stop talking to you (wasting time) but he said what what he said and I try to explain it to you.
I hope what you saying about putting his card on his brother rig do the work because if not well it is bad news.

My brothers power supply is only 450w unfortunately so I don't think it would be a good idea to put the gtx 980 in it.

If it's a high quality and the Card is not under load gaming, it won't hurt it. We just want to see if it boots.

Max power draw doesn't occur until you load it up with 3D, but a 450W PSU is unlikely to have the power connectors to hook this beast up.

It was just a thought before we assume all is lost.

Ok i'm gonna try it later (he's on it at the moment) I will let you know how it goes later. His power supply does have two 6+2pins so I might as well try it. I appreciate all your help :) Thanks
