My cpu is too hot

I have got a i7 8700k 3.7 ghz processor combined with the Corsair h80i along with an Asus z370 a mb and im getting a temprature of 90 degrees in the bios before it starts limiting itself. Its a new build. I havent got further than the bios for fear of overheating it and destroying my £400 cpu. I have tried removing the cooler, applying new thermal paste and that didnt help. I have the two fans on the cooler plugged into the cpu fan slots and the pump plugged into the aio pump header instead of having the fans plugged into the pump and then the pump plugged into the cpu fan header as the wire coming from the pump is a 3 pin and the cpu fan header is a 4 pin so for some reason that wont work. Does anyone know why its so hot ?

You could try another cooler to see if that's the issue, the pump could be malfunctioning. Do you still have the stock intel cooler that came with the cpu? And also,it seems stupid but are you sure the cooler is well screwed on the cpu?

A part from that don't be too worried, you're cpu will turn off before frying.

Try to plug the pump's 3 pin inside the cpu fan. Even if the mobo cpu fan is a 4 pin you can plug a 3 pin. You just have to align it in the right way.
You can even try to run it with just the pump running. If the pump works you should get temperatures a lot lower than 90c even without the fans running

what motherboard are you using btw? i got a h80i v2 myself to cool a 8700k cpu OC to 5Hz with average temps from 35C to 80C in adaptive offset voltage mode tho. i connected my 2 radiator fans to it with the CPU header in the MOBO. the radiator is frount-mounted btw push pull in-take. depending on your MOBOs BIOS tho. the system will shutdown right away before it reaches any dangerous temps to damage your CPU with its default optimal "safe" builtin.

Im using the asus prime z370 a.
I have my cooler mounted at the rear but have tried the top and the front and it dosent make a differance. Do you know how to check if the pump is working?

if you put your ear close enough, you will hear the water flowing. if you put your finger on the pump hoses, you can feel water flowing. thats the only legit way of checking for me tho. as long as you connect to the CPU headers, the ASUS BIOS will do a good job of protecting your CPU from damage due to overheat coz it will defintely shutdown even if the pump fails.

what thermal past are you using? you cleaned your cpu and the aio pump with cleanly enough before you applied your thermal paste? a very small pea-size amount on the center of teh CPU is good enough.

i hope mounted the back plate (rubber) behind your motherboard already. and set in the screws really really tight but not too tight you have to exert too much with your hand. keep one hand on top of the aio mount and the other on your screwdriver. as long as you see the fans running and reacting to temps by increasing its RPMs on your OC software, and feel the fluids moving inside the hoses. then its fine.

as for CPU overheating, it could be from another cause if not from the cooler. btw, corsair have a very good warranty support for defective coolers. so you can try just letting them know you need a replacement since you think its not working at all.

another thing to consider is how you overclocked your CPU. if you put too much manual voltage on it. lke over 1.35V~1.4ish, youd defintely see high temps like 80C and above. esp with just a H80i cooler. try lowering it to less than 1.3V and see how your temps are. and adjust your block freq a lil.

as for chassis fans, depending on your case. better have good 140mm intakes from the front to flow on top of your MOBO if youre having youre radiator as an outtake rear.

I used the coolermaster e1 thermal paste. It had an included cleaning kit.i used the pea sized method. I did also mount the rubber backplate. The fans do also react to the temprature. What other cause might it be if its not the cooler?

if you got HWmonitor to check your overall temps. temps around the MOBO should be around 30-40C normally. GPU temps more or less the same surrounding it. and CPU while gaming from 70~80C.

did you load all the drivers from the ASUS website? it could be a driver issue. and i believe ASUS has this incredible OC software where it does it all for you. fan controls and even regulating temps with voltage input using the 4-5 gear performance switching. if you install that, probably your system would be more stable.

when i first installed mine without GPU without any drivers installed. it ran at around 28-35C. im not sure what else is there that would cause your CPU to overheat even on just stock settings. you havent even touched your BIOS right? and its a clean windows install? also try to update your BIOS. should be very easy with ASUS boards. got internet on UEFI which is awesome.

and probably should be safe to check your CPU socket pins as well on your MOBO mount. if one of them pins were unaligned was for the your power output ground, that could be the cause.

The temp of my MOBO is about 25 degrees and i havent installed my gpu yet.
