I am switching from FM2+ to 1511.

I will buy a new SSD and install windows on there. I first bought a retail version of Windows 8.1 but then upgraded to Windows 10. Can i use my 8.1 key to activate windows 10? And if i disconnect my current HDD and just install windows on the SSD, will i later, if i reconnect the HDD, keep the files?

1. Read and do this before you change any parts:

That is for the licensing

2. For the actual operation...
You really need to do a full wipe and reinstall.
It may 'just work', when see all that new hardware, but absolutely no guarantee.
It may fail horribly. No boot at all.
It may work, but you find a host of little issues later, needing a full wipe and reinstall.

With all new hardware, a clean install is always recommended, often required.

And if you're doing a clean install on the SSD, your 'files' will still exist on the old drive, but your...

I am not sure if an 8.1 key will activate win 10, I don't think so. I was in the same position a while ago, on win 10 which I upgraded from a 8.1 retail key then I got a new system. What I did was link my key to my microsoft account so as soon as I signed in on my fresh install of win 10 it was activated.

Yes the files will still be on the drive but you may have file ownership issues trying to access them on a diffrent OS. If so you can take ownership if you are signed in as an admin.
