8600k or 8700k for gaming?

Hey guys... so im thinking about getting myself a little christmas gift... the 8700k. However, i just wanna check with you guys if i should even make that move. I do 1080p 144Hz gaming and i have a 1070 with a 4790k right now.
would 8700 be over kill?
Or should i do a 7700k?

go with the newer mb and cpu. the coffee lake and newer cpu will not work on the older mb now. your better off paying little more for the newer cpu.

8600K or 8700K will both be good upgrade and not overkill for your GPU. 7700K on the other hand is not good move - performance boost is too small to justify the cost (cos you need to count CPU and mobo and RAM).

In my mind the 8700 isn't really faster than the 7700k And you already have an i7 4790K. Where do you have problems? I would think your CPU is good enough for gaming right now.

The stock 7700K is just behind the 8700. And OC'd stays in the same position. The 8700K is faster yes, but it's not like its much faster.

I'd stick with the 4790k. I was happy with my i7 3820 with a 980ti(similar performance to a 1070). I recently upgraded to a 8700k but only because my X79 board started having issues so I was kinda forced to upgrade.

Considering how close together they are, I'm currently a fan of the 7700K. Better/more board choices as well. If you are worried about the future it doesn't make sense to build one gen back. If you can afford it, the 8700K is a great chip. If you are only gaming, the 8400 is also a great chip. The 7700K was on big discount for the holiday season so picking one up for ~$260 was possible. the 8700 can be $300+, so some savings were possible. You can't really go wrong with any of them.

Looking at the graph, it's JUST ahead of the 7700K at stock, and falls just behind at 4.9GHz. Both results are close enough for me to be considered a tie. Looking at it that way I consider the 8600K to be the better chip because it's cheaper.
