Hi I'm looking to upgrade from my AMD FX-6300, so far I think I've found the cpu upgrade that I would like which is a intel i7 7700.

What I'm wondering is how much of and improvement this is compared to the one I currently have, if it helps at all the games I play are, pubg, World of Warcraft and the total war series though I would like to start playing more open world games. I know that I will need to buy a new motherboard and ram which I don't mind, also if you have an other suggestions like for example I was just looking at some comparison videos and the i5-7400 seemed to hold up very well too with most of the games that I want to play (60fps+).

*More information:

I don't play at 4k or anything, 1920x1080 is what I usually play, I have no interest in playing games in 4k, well at least not for now. It should also be noted that I want to keep it in the price range £0-£420 maximum so please don't suggest that I get a 1080ti and Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition because its not that much its just x £.

My current specs in full
Mobo: M5A78L-M/USB3
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: Gigabyte AMD R9-280 Windforce
PSU: Cooler master 850w
RAM: Hyperx fury 16GB
SSD: Samsung SSD 950 - 256GB
HDD: Segate 1tb
Cooler:Cooler Master Hyper 212
Case: NZXT Phantom

If you got this far then thank you for reading and hopefully you will be able to help advice me

you can't just upgrade the CPU.
You need MB + CPU and RAM if you going with new parts like 6th gen and up intel or ryzen.

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor (£186.50 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: Asus - Prime Z370-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£104.99 @ Box Limited)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory (£143.99 @ Ebuyer)
Total: £435.48

you can reuse the rest of your parts. The GPU will require an upgrade next.
the i5-8400 is about the same performance as older quad core i7 like the 7700K.
Older quad core i5 are thing of the past simply because holding up average FPS is not enough for you to enjoy. In many games CPUs like i5-7400 will simply...

In many games CPUs like i5-7400 will simply cause the game to stutter/micro freeze. and it really ruins the experience. also they are already sitting at very high utilization in modern games.
so i'd recommend going with at least i5-8400, if you can afford the 8600K great. but 8400 will do the job for the next few years.

I don't feel like you read my post,

I know I needed to upgrade the other parts ". I know that I will need to buy a new motherboard and ram which I don't mind,"

I also said that I was spending maximum £420.

I will take what you said into consideration but for example the ram, I feel like I only need something like CRUCIAL 8GB DDR4 2133MHZ.

And I said i7 7700 not i7 7700k

But in games like Total War, isn't it better to have fewer cores? as games like that can't utilise the extra ones, Also the reason why I didn't feel like he read my post is that he said that I can't just upgrade the CPU which I already said that I know that I need to upgrade the other parts too.

But can you explain to me why its better ( from a gaming standpoint) because you've explain why getting more ram would be better but not why this CPU would be better. Just don't want to waste my money is all.

I went through your post and for me was enough to get that you want to upgrade the CPU to play mostly open world games (which are kinda heavy on the CPU) and you want to make it under 420 pounds.
technically, there is no problem to use slower RAM. But there will be some performance hit.
The K part is not important. I just suggested better performance for the same price.
The main improvements you will feel are:
1. higher FPS
2. smother game play (no stuttering/freezes).

Thank you, I'm starting to understand why now, If you don't mind helping me with a few more questions some of them might be a little hard to answer but I hope you can help me with them.

Looking at both my AMD-FX6300 and the INTEL® CORE™ i5-8400, they both look quite similar in specs just looking at it from an overview.

If its a better CPU over the I7-7700, why is it significantly lower in price?

And as an estimate how much better in your opinion would it be compared to my AMD-FX6300

(When I'm answering I'm not in anyway trying to seem rude)

*Update*
I took a look on a website that I have been using to compare cpu's over the past week or so and it does say that the I5-8400 is 5% better then the I7-7700. My only worry is how it would perform on games like Total war attila.

They (FX-6300 and i5-8400) are very different architectures, so you can not directly compare them by specs. only by performance.
i5-8400 is the new gen which is priced like older i5-7400. the new i7-8700 is priced like the older i7-7700.

IMHO, the improvement would be from almost unplayable to very enjoyable. especially in AAA games.

Okay, just going to send a link to a cpu+motherboard bundle I found which if its the right one should cut costs quite a bit to the point where I could get 16gb easily

for total war you want raw cpu speed. which intel definitely has over amd (single threaded) as much of an amd fan as i am.
also have played a lot of total war series which brings cpu to it knees.

6 cores have defo arrived for gaming. ie some games. the raw speed of 7700k is a killer for gaming....or 8700k.

8600k too..but probs outside yr budget. fast ram sometimes ( couple game titles ive seen cant remember exactly the ones i saw results for) makes 10%+ diff in fps, but rarely.
16gb is a definite. depending on yr gaming titles. but u never want to run out of ram. while playing. ever.

its a hard call between 7700 and 8400. but i would go 8400 between those two....As a bang for buck option, although 7700 still edges ahead in some apps for sure. 8600k OC would push the limits. which is the limiting factor with 8700 non k. stock speed.

id say 8600k is the goto for raw speed in gaming personally. and 8400/7700 is a toss up :D

Yeah, it's the right CPU and decent MB. they are about the same price I linked in the first post.
for the RAM, pay attention that latency is not higher than similar kits. it also affects the performance.

Really now the choice is which motherboard I should choose.

Have you monitored your utilization to see where the issue is? Can use msi afterburner or the like and run Total War. If any of your cpu cores stays at or near 100% and gpu is much lower, the new processor should swing things the other way.

If the gpu is pegged out and the cpu isnt, then anew cpu may help some but not much.

Be sure to look at individual cores, not overall utilization.

When I took a look some time ago I saw that my gpu never got about 45% but my cpu was always at 100%

I'm not sure which one to buy at the moment because all of them seem expensive xD
