Using the thermal paste on the CPU cooler which came with the CPU?

Hey there,

I just wanted to ask whether there would be any difference between the thermal paste which came on the heatsink and using something like Arctic 5? To be more specific, I bought an i5 which came with the heatsink/cooler and it already has some thermal compound applied on the bottom which I think is too little. Would I benefit much from replacing it with something like Arctic 5?

Many thanks,
Jacob

The stock HSF with stock paste is perfectly fine when installed correctly on the first try. Aftermarket paste is only necessary when using aftermarket HSF and aiming for high enough OCs that require those few degrees of extra cooling performance.

Also, the stock HSF kind of relies on the stock paste's high viscosity (almost clay-like at room temperature) for correct installation. Replacing it with lower viscosity paste may yield insufficient contact pressure for reliable long-term performance.
