Hello,
I am building my first pc and will be using either the i5-8400 or 8600. I'm not a gamer at all really but do a lot of autocad/solidworks/mastercam being a mech. Engineer. I do see myself playing some racing games since I'll have a nice pc build that's capable of it so I figure why not.

Here's my question;
I have a freesync monitor and am unsure if I should go get a rx580 so it's matches the monitor with the freesync technology or go out and get a 1060 6gb which is definitely easier and cheaper to get?

So what would be better a lower end gpu with freesync or a better non freesync gpu?

TIA

At 1080p gaming any kind of adaptive sync is better than none, no matter who makes the card. A blind vote for either company here is pointless.

There are currently no cards that are really great at 4K gaming all games. Though for racing games the 1080Ti wouldn't be too bad at all.

for racing and esports games even the relatively cheap RX 560 is fine and will do all the production tasks you outlined with aplomb.

Adaptive sync of any kind is a real pleasure to play with too. I'd take an RX 580 with Freesync over a non GSync solution with the 1060 any day. If the only games I was playing were low impact games and didn't require a 580 or 1060 level card , I'd do the 560 with freesync.

If no adaptive sync was involved and the choice was 580 or 1060 I'd get the 1060.

So for what I'm doing I'm better off with the better gpu without free sync? The monitor is a 4k monitor but i know neither of those cards are strong enough for 4k and I've read about bad scaling or pixelization (sp?) when running a 4k monitor at 1440 so id be happy with 1080 at higher settings, unless for a little bit more there's a 4k card that will work well for racing games and similar stuff.

Ill link my other post to this one when i make it listing all the components I'm using to see if anyone can spot a problem with the build.

Thanks Again,
