I built a PC 2 years ago on a low budget to play games mid quality at 1080P

I currently have an AMD FX 6300 paired with a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P motherboard.

I believe it is time to upgrade my CPU as I have already decided I'm upgrading my GTX 650 Ti to a GTX 1050 Ti.

I need some advice on a CPU to upgrade to, whether intel or AMD doesn't matter to me, I just need something a bit more modern and also need a new motherboard to support the CPU.

Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks!

Nope, there is absolutely no way to use DDR3 stick on DDR4 slot. There are motherboards for 6th gen Intel CPUs that accept DDR3 ram, but that is not advised option, as those CPUs don't officially support DDR3. Such motherboard has to downvolt RAM sticks to about 1.35 V or maybe slightly higher, and that often causes problem, as not every DDR3 ram is capable of running stable at such low voltage.
Other option is something like Intel i5-4690 or i7-4790 and motherboard with 1150 socket, as those support DDR3. But since they are older parts, they are becoming hard to get and thus somewhat expensive.

@DRagor,

Is it possible to insert DDR3 RAM into a DDR4 RAM slot so I can worry about it later, I just want to upgrade motherboard and CPU at the moment.

I don't have a current set budget, I would like some options of advice so I can compare prices and performance difference

Alright what options do I have for a new motherboard, CPU and RAM for a budget gaming setup?

Ok, there is a build that uses DDR3, pretty much not many choices here, but the mobo is supposedly very good at overclocking:

The i3 setup has caught my eye. Is it good for gaming when paired with a 1050 Ti. Would there be any bottlenecking issues?
