Can't change CPU ratio past 42 - i5 3570k

I've just picked up an Oculus Rift and am trying to get full use out of my 3570k. I'd like to overclock it at 4.5 but for some reason the ratio won't go past 42. I'm a total beginner to overclocking but I understand the basic concepts. I'm just not sure why it wont let me OC at a higher level. I've also tried adjusting the speed through a program that Biostar provides (Toverclocker) and here I can't adjust the ratio past 40. So my BIOS ratio is currently set to 42, Toverclock says my ratio is at 40, and when I run CPU-Z it tells me that my core speed is 4000.50 MHz - shouldn't it be 4200 MHz? Either way, any thoughts on why I couldn't set it to 45?

I've updated my BIOS to the latest version but I am still having the same issue. I'd really appreciate some assistance on this.

Here's a video of my attempt to go past 42 in the BIOS.

Your system is likely using all FOUR CORES thus the "x40" multiplier. Even if they don't get fully utilized I think it will still register that way.

*You should try setting every core to "42" and see what happens. Then try "43" and so on.

If the system boots but crashes you may need to experiment with voltage. I'm guessing that's the POWER LIMIT setting? If so, you should try the LOWEST power setting first, then try a higher multiplier. If you crash try raising the POWER setting which may stabilize things (at higher temperature).

So it's generally a combination of multiplier and voltage while using the least amount of voltage (power settings I guess).

**I have the i7-3770K and got 4.5GHz; went to 4.6GHz and crashed then backed off to 4.4GHz (all cores x44) to be stable. I did not add any voltage though the PSU, motherboard, and CPU (silicon lottery) are all factors. As well as the CPU cooler.

(I tried 4.6GHz but the voltage tweak caused the temperature to jump up 15degC. I guess it broke some other power saving features. I could have cooled that but at higher noise for very minimal gain so I thought what's the point?)

You need a half decent cooler like the Cryorig H7 or H5 Ultimate to hit higher clock speeds (again assuming everything else works). I have a Noctua NH-D14 (older 3-pin fans) but frankly for most people I don't think Noctua is the best value if you can get a $45USD cooler with similar cooling to a $70 (ish) Noctua.

Using CPU-ID's HWMonitor to look at CPU temperature you should go with 75degC as your worst-case under REALISTIC 100% load (like Handbrake full CPU usage but not Prime95 which is overly stressful and would put the same setup well over 80degC).

I've tried disabling Turbo Mode and changing the "Core Ratio Limit" on each to 43 but it just automatically reverts to 42 for the first two cores and then 41 and 40 for the 3rd and 4th core. I havn't even messed with the voltages yet since I'm not going beyond 4.2 Ghz. Really confused why it keeps reverting. Thanks for the reply though.

I've tried resetting and disabling turbo mode so I can change each core individually but it still reverts to 42 when I try to do anything beyond that.
