Not so old pc encountering slow speeds and horrible frame rates

My previous computer, a Dell XPS 8700 that runs most recent games like a charm, recently started slowing down a TON after a minor Windows 10 update. I have been experiencing really low frame rates (highest I’ve seen is literally 12 fps) in easy to run games such as Terraria and Overwatch. Just a week ago I was rockin’ PUBG at 60 fps and cruising through rendering workloads like it was nothing.

Just opening a word document was a struggle.

I also realized that the fans we’re working unbelievably hard, making the computer sound like a jet engine.

I think the problem might be related to the processor overheating or something. I’m not 100% sure. Though the Windows 10 update needed to be uninstalled due to some problem I am unaware of that caused the computer to be in a constant boot loop on startup.

If the problem is due to overheating, I wouldn’t even have any way of knowing since my computer won’t even let me install a temperature monitoring software because of how slow it is.

I am considering opening up the PC and taking a look at all of the components to make sure they’re all right. I might need to replace the thermal paste on the CPU and clean out all of the dust.

Core pc specifications:

Intel Core i7 (4th Gen) 4770 / 3.4 GHz turbo to 3.9 GHz
16GB DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz
2TB 7200rpm SATA HDD
GTX 745

Solution
The thermal paste should be fine the 4770 is not that old i would open it up and clean the dust out of the CPU cooler and the rest of the PC.
If you can download OCCT and stress the CPU it will also show the temp, and download a program to check your hard drive WD and Seagate both make one.
