All games crashing shortly after launch

I'm at a loss. The gaming PC I built this summer has never worked the way it should, but it's steadily gotten worse. Current state is that it works mostly fine for everything but gaming. Whenever I start a game, I'll usually be able to play for 3-4 minutes and then I'll be thrown to desktop after losing display output for a few seconds. The game will still be running in the background (sounds continue playing), but I won't be able to switch back. Then after a couple of seconds the game crashes completely. Windows will still be running just fine, no system crash or BSOD. From time to time I will lose display output for a few seconds while just browsing the web or whatever - monitor goes black, then comes back. No error messages.

Steps I've tried:

  • completely removed and re-installed GPU drivers
run all updates on Windows and the games in question
monitored GPU and CPU temperatures (no spikes or overheating)
    updated BIOS
completely re-formatted drive and re-installed Windows
The GPU is most likely not at fault - I had the same problem with the RX480 which I built this system around. When the issue started happening I returned it under warranty, but it was lost in transit before getting checked and I got a new RX 580 as a replacement. The issue still persists with this new card. Maybe the PSU? How can I check that?

Specs:
AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus - PRIME B350-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard
Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Sapphire - Radeon RX 580 8GB NITRO+ Video Card
[strike]Corsair - VS 550W ATX Power Supply[/strike]
Edit: PSU replaced, now Corsair RM550x - no change.

Check how much power your GPU is drawing, maybe your card needs more power than your PSU can manage. I definitely think your PSU is the culprit as the VS series from corsair has a bad reputation and has many complaints, especially when used for gaming. Check how much voltage your 12 V rail is producing using a multimeter as well. In my opinion, you should just RMA the PSU and buy a better one.

A shop near me has an RM550x in stock, I'll be picking that up tomorrow and replacing the VS to see if that helps.

Thanks for your help so far, I'll update the thread when I've replaced the PSU.

Not the monitor either, have had this box connected to two different ones (with different DP cables) with the same results.

I just borrowed a GTX 1050ti from a friend and have so far been able to game at will with no crashes whatsoever. I think I just got really unlucky and got a bad RX480 and afterwards a bad RX580 as a replacement. Either that or some weird software bug in this config of clean Win10 and newest AMD drivers.

Since I've had enough of this I've decided to return the 580 under warranty and get a GTX 1060-6G or a 1070 as a replacement. Not willing to risk a Radeon for the third time after all this.

Thanks for the help!
