Hello,

my motherboard is going out. I could either buy the same motherboard that supports my lga 1150 i7 4790k cpu, or I can buy a new motherboard that supports la 1151, but then I would have to buy a new cpu as well such as the i7 7700k.

Repacing just the board will be about $150, replacing the cpu and board will be about $500.

What do you think I should do. Should I take the dive and buy al new or live in the past and save money?

You will also have to buy new memory if you move to anything newer than LGA 1150. Standard DDR3 memory is incompatible with the last two generations of Intel (And a 5th Gen upgrade that has limited DDR3 compatibility would make no sense at all) and the current generation of AMD. DDR4 will be necessary.

I would suggest you find a suitable board for what you have now unless there is an imperative need for a newer, more capable system. If you system is still doing what you need it to do there is no need to upgrade as the 4790k is still extremely capable.
