Why is my total available graphics at 14302MB and my dedicated at 6144MB. Half of my 32GB of ram has been hardware reserved.

Hello,

I just put together a new PC and I am having an issue with half of my RAM being hardware reserved and not available for use.

My NVIDIA Control panel says that I have 14302MB of total available graphics and 6144MB of dedeicated video memory. Is the video card somehow reserving half of my ram? If so, how could I reduce this?

Thank you very much for any suggestions you may have.

PC Specs:

OS: Windows 10 64bit
Motherboard: Asus Prime B350 Plus
Processor: Ryzen 7
Graphics: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1060
Ram: 4 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2133Mhz

Solution
Not sure whats going on to be honest, But I'll throw my 2cents in.

When I bought my Asus x99 Deluxe and 32GB of ram, 4x 8gb sticks, 2 of the 4 sticks would sometimes not work in windows, sometimes 1 of them would or sometimes both.

Anyway updating my bios seems to have fixed it, all 4 sticks always read and are usable in windows. I'd start by updating your bios and see if the resolve your issues. Its vary easy on Asus, if you did not install the AI Suit, I would avoid installing it, just use a blank flash drive and extract the bios on the flash drive and boot into the bios and then flash the bios from there. AI Suit you can do it from windows, but AI Suit is vary problematic.

Thank you for the suggestion,

I updated to the latest BIOS. Unfortunately that did not resolve the issue. The BIOS recognizes all 4 sticks of RAM but is still only displaying half of of the total ram as available.

I spoke with ASUS, they suggested having the motherboard replaced as it may have been defective. I will see if that does anything.

Thanks,

Chris

I've been having to use my PC to get some videos processed so I have not got round to switching the board just yet. I will let you know the results when I do.

Thank you. I just updated bios again and no dice... I'm thinking at this point the memory is incompatible. I also cannot left click on start button or far right action center button in windows 10. Other system functions are slow and OS is on 2700mbps NVME drive(i confirmed with crystal disk) I may have to bite the bullet and get a pair on the QVL list which i thought Ripjaws V were... Good luck

Sometimes giving the ram a bit more voltage can cure the problem, Don't over do it. At first I'd try 2133mhz and see if all the RAM is detected and usable, if not try a bit more voltage. If it works try the XMP profile and see if it reads and is usable, if not try more voltage again.

Im not entirely sure whats safe for AMD's newer stuff voltage wise.

When I had this problem, I was able to give it more voltage and it did work when 1, 2 or even 3 sticks were not detected or usable. CPU-Z always saw the sticks but Windows and bios never did for some reason. This was on a set of 2x dual channel Corsair LPX DDR4 3000mhz kits and on a Crucial Ballistix Elite 2666mhz Quad channel kit, at 1 point with corsair I though my board just don't like that kit, I got another kit the Crucial quad channel kit and the same crap happened, though the same giving more voltage did help.

At that point I though my board was defective, I bought it as an open box but never installed or used at Micro Center for $215, good price for the thing at the time, Factory warranty still applied, Going to RMA my board, I was on Asus site and they came out with a new bios the same day I put in for an RMA, Which fixed my problem entirely along with the USB 3.0 issue I was having.

I hate having Memory problems, I had an old AMD system where 4 stick of DDR3 1600 RAM was not stable at any voltage at stock or above, still random BSOD, Under volt the ram from 1.55 to 1.4v fixed it, and was able to get tighten the timings, so weird.

Thank you. I ordered another set of memory on the QVL and now im thinking its the motherboard. Still having half memory show up in bios. Half hardware reserved in windows and issues with windows explorer functionality

Yeah at this point I would say its the motherboard as well if 2 kits are doing the same thing. Have you tried to reinstall windows? Maybe just a goofed up install.
