Help picking a new wifi router

I'm wanting to stop renting from my ISP and switch out my router/modem combo.

For a router, here is my situation: small 1 BR apartment. 850 sq ft. Have a single PC connected via wire for games and large downloads. Via wifi I have 2 phones, 2 laptops, and my TV which I stream with Plex from my wired desktop. Live in an apartment building so 2.4 and 5ghz bands are saturated. I'd like the flexibility to pick some of those empty channels like 100 - 120.

I work from home via wifi on my work laptop so stability is absolutely critical. My current old school modem-router never drops out wifi. I read constantly about Netgear's Nighthawk and TP Link having $200 routers that constantly drop wifi and have issues. But when I look at top-rated routers, these always come up. The 1-star reviews on Amazon scare the hell out of me.

Is Asus a better solution? What should I go for?

Since you need DFS to use empty channels, you might consider the Asus RT-AC3200, which has better throughput results than the Linksys WRT3200ACM and other DFS routers with high transmit power like the TP-Link Archer C3200. You just might want to disable band-steering, and keep in mind that it's tri-band. I don't know if I trust the Trend Micro Ts&Cs that go with some Asus firmware for the more advanced QoS options, but the basic manual QoS should work just fine for you.

With amateur reviews online, you never know whether it's the neighbors' routers that are causing packet loss, or the router itself, and the average consumer won't trouble themselves to find out. The Nighthawk R7000 is pretty solid for a mid-range router, but doesn't cover the DFS channels.

The DFS channels are those empty channels from 100-120 or so? And I take it the AC1900 Asus doesn't allow the selection of those channels?

Right, center frequencies from 5250-5720 MHz (channels 50-144) are DFS. And the RT-AC1900 doesn't transmit on DFS. Here are the Asus models that do:
