RAM Upgrading Question

So I have been using 2x4GB RAM and have recently purchased a new set of 2x4GB RAM pieces for my PC so it will have a total of 16GB and run in quad channel. Do I just have to add the new parts to the appropriate slots on the motherboard, or do I need to also install something? The RAM pieces are from different brands if that matter.

Solution
if old ram and new ram are same frequency you don't have to do anything special, just put them in the slots on your MOBO start your rig and have fun :) windows will detect the ram and you can play some games.

if rams are different frequency then your mobo will choose the lowest one and RAM memory will work on that minimum frequency.

before you do anything, go to your motherboards support site and check RAM spesc/compatibility.

as long as you are meeting the requirements, any ram is okay to put on board. if you mix them, the one with the lowest freq will be your maximum speed. depending on your mobo, if you have more than 2, then you will lose the dual channel feature. also placement slots matter in some boards, so check your mobo's manual.

- You probably don't want to try to add RAM to your current RAM, mixing and matching RAM is generally a bad idea unless you can find the exact same brand and model of RAM. Also use RAM that comes in matching kits and this is especially important for dual/quad channel.

- If you give your motherboard name we can tell you which RAM is compatible.

- Unless you are running a server you won't see a noticeable performance gain in things like gaming going up to quad-channel configuration. It would be better and more reliable to opt for a 2x8GB configuration in dual channel mode.

The motherboard I have is the Gigabyte - GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+, the current RAM I am using is the Crucial - Ballistix Sport 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 Memory, and the new RAM I got was the Corsair - Vengeance LP 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 Memory. I assumed that they would work well together because I did not see a problem on pcpartpicker.

There is also CAS latency/timings to consider although since both sets run at 9-9-9-24, The Corsair and Balistix should work. If you are doing something like running RAM that has different timings and/or frequencies it can produce issues.
