Hi,

So i have an 2280 M.2 Crucial MX300 275gb SSD already installed with windows 10 64 running.
Today i bought another 2280 M.2 Crucial MX300 larger capacity 525gb SSD.
I installed the new 525gb on the upper slot (with the older still on lower M.2 slot).
When booted up i was welcomed with an error. "M.2 device support PCIe devices only, can't boot system" or something along those lines.

I understood online that i can install two M.2 2280 devices. So, what am i missing here? Is it BIOS settings or cause i have another SSD connected through SATA2 cable?

Any help would be appreciated. I hate to lose the other M.2 SSD :(

Brief System Specs:
Asus Z270 F Gaming mobo
Intel i7 7700k CPU clocked at 5.0ghz (with Asus's one button BIOS setting)
Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooler
2x Crucial Ballistix 8gb ddr4 Ram stick clocked at 2778hz
Asus GTX 1080 Ti Strix gpu
1x Crucial MX300 2280 M.2 275gb capacity
1x Liteon 256gb SSD via sata2 cable
1x Toshiba 2.5" hard drive (ripped off from an old external HDD)
Thermaltake v31 case with 3x exhaust fans

Temps all within normal.

Here's what the notes say on the motherboards website:
*2 The M.2_1 socket shares SATA_1 port when use M.2 SATA mode device. Adjust BIOS settings to use a SATA device.
*3 The M.2_2 socket shares SATA_56 ports when use M.2 PCIE mode device in X4 mode. Adjust BIOS settings to use SATA devices.

Occupying both M.2 slots with a SATA based drive in slot 1 and a PCI-E drive in slot 2 will leave you with SATA ports 2, 3 and 4 free according to that info.

You probably have a SATA conflict. When you install a m.2 drive, it takes over one of the available SATA busses. Install a second one and you take over another one. If that one is already being used (by an HDD or an expansion card, etc) you get a conflict. I'd go get the User's Manual, then boot into BIOS and see what is going on. I'm starting a build with a Z270 E gaming board and it is very specific on what goes where and how.

Yea i figured that out eventually.
So, if i buy a NVMe drive like a Plextor PX256M8PeG, can i install it as system drive on one of the M.2 slots, keep the other M.2 sata slot for the new 525gb, and still use 2 sata ports for an SSD and HDD?
Or does the NVMe cancel all sata ports??

It could be that the M.2_1 socket accepts SATA while the M.2_2 socket does not accommodate SATA. When checking your "2280 M.2 Crucial MX300 275gb SSD" in Newegg is comes up as a SATA drive. M.2_2 should accept NVME but I'm not sure if you RAID 0 them if you would loose performance due to reduction of 16 to 8 lanes.. I am new to this site and understand it is a long time ago you were asking your question but I hope this was informative enough to guide you on where to further your investigation. Good luck..
