i have a Dell XPS 400(service tag:2msrn91 / manufacture date: March 15, 2006) that i want to upgrade the processor in, i know the originally max supported cpu was the latest pentium d at the time, i know there are many more lga 775 processors out there but im concerned that the chipset would hold a processor newer than a 2006 pentium d back. does anyone know of a lga 775 core series or xeon series processor that is supported or won't be held back by the chipset that would have superior performance to the pentium d 820?

the current specs of the system:
OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 non r2 Datacenter edition service pack 2 64-BIT
CPU: Intel Pentium D 820
Ram: 3x1gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 and 1x1gb Crucial DDR2 ram (4GB TOTAL)
Hard drives: 1x Seagate Barracuda 160gb from Hewlett Packard Elite 8100 CMT ,
1x Western Digital Enterprise RE3 500GB, and Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB
Graphics: EVGA Geforce GTX 480
Sound: 1x Dell sigmattel integrated sound card, 1x Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

I realize this computer is quote "outdated", but it has always been the most reliable pc i've ever owned, and it may be not worth upgrading, but its the only desktop i have and i don't plan to get a new pc in at least another 2 or 3 years,

"THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SOLUTIONS!!!!!!!!!!"
PS:I forgot to mention my power supply, its a EVGA Supernova G2 1000 Watt power supply

Solution
Pentium D 960 is the best CPU that your rig can use, and frankly it's not much of a difference.

Core duo's will not run on that unit , at all.

Sorry my friend.

you need to contact them directly, they often do not update their bios to support most cpu's the motherboard chipset should

According to what I can find, your RAM is max'd out, and there isn't a CPU worth upgrading to. You pretty much have a legacy system that isn't going anywhere. But as long as it works for you, there's no reason to replace it until it blows up...

as far as ram goes, on a 32bit os, it does 4gb max, on a 64 bit os( im on one) will do a max of 8gb

Do you know of any Xeons that would run in it, I would think that any socket lga775 processors would run in it
Ive seen people bieng able to run core series and core I series processors in the dimension 9150 which is basically the base unit of what i have.

I have no idea if the regulator can be replaced or if you'll be successful in writing the new BIOS either. But I highly doubt it.

It's probable the design phase for the 400 and 9150 were done at different times and probably implemented by different motherboard vendors.

Well any upgrade will do, even if the pentium d 960 dont make a mighty difference
My HP Elite 8100 CMT computer died and this dell is all i have

im saving to build a new rig, so my trusty old dell will have to get me through at least 1 or 2 years

I don't think the 9150 supports Core2. The 9200 did, and the XPS410 did. it's just one chipset too old. The fastest Pentium D about equals the slowest Core2.
The E520 in my sig. is the same as the 9200, XPS410. It supports P4/D AND Core2 .
Here is a thread that in the end says that it supports 8GB DDR2 800 RAM. So you should try that first." Latest" Dell BIOS will be required for best CPU/RAM support. I've heard of people having to add memory one stick at a time to get it recpgnized. Low density RAM is required (256x64=2 GB)
