23.8" 1440p vs 23.8" 4k Dell Monitor

Due to my desk overhang, I am limited to a 24" monitor. Both the monitors I am looking at are 23.8". Both in question are IPS and have a 60Hz refresh rate. My graphics card is a GTX 1080 at stock clocks. Here are links to both.

1440p: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1197315-REG/dell_p2416d_24_widescreen_led.html
4k: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PC9HFNY/?tag=pcpapi-20

Question:
Which one would you recommend and why?
What are drawbacks of both?
Any other better monitors out there for under $350 dollars?

Solution
Are these purely for gaming or more mixed uses?

At 24" a 4K display is going to provide a super pin-sharp image which may be required for other purposes but the GTX 1080 will struggle to drive all those pixels without turning the game settings down, ( in some few cases down to the medium preset ) to keep gameplay reasonably fluid so for a gaming option it's not really suitable.
At 24" 1440 rez is a good balance between resolution and potential gameplay, there are very few games a GTX1080 can't run at max, or nearly max settings and stay at, or well above 60FPS, so this is the option I'd go for.

I ended up going with the 24" 4K display. Like you said, its super sharp and beautiful to look at. I do have to turn settings down in games but I'm willing to do it. Thanks for the answer.

With a 4k monitor, you'll have almost no need for any anti-aliasing of any kind, AA, AF, MXAA, FXAA etc so that's a relief on the cpu. With its sharpness and physical size, many gpu bound settings can also be turned down with no real loss in picture quality, at 24" you'll not need the uber fine details a 4k can produce, you can't see them anyways.

Just be cognisant of the fact it is a 4k display, 4k can have problems with uber high fps that's enjoyed by 1080p gamers, so I'd not worry about the exact fps count as much as if you get a good, smooth game.
