MSI 990FXA Gaming: Front speaker jack mono only, front mike jack no input

Earlier this year, I built a PC that includes an MSI 990FXA Gaming motherboard in a Thermaltake case. I've been using a Logitech USB headset with mike for gaming comms. For Christmas, my wife gave me a swank new gaming headset that plugs into the 1/8-inch headphone and microphone jacks. It works fine when I plug it into the jacks on the back of my case, but I want to plug it into the front, and that's where the problem is. The front headphone jack only outputs sound in mono -- sometimes through both earphones, sometimes only through the left earphone. The front microphone jack doesn't transmit voice input at all, although the system does detect that I have a mike plugged in.

I opened up the case and confirmed that my HD Audio jack is correctly plugged into the JAUD1 front panel audio connector plug. (I tried switching to the AU '97 jack, but then it refused to detect either the headphones or the microphone, so I switched back to HD Audio.)

Is this a problem with my motherboard, a problem with my case, or a software/firmware problem?

Solution
Never mind, I found the problem. It seems to lie in the headphones' control box. If I plug the headphones directly into the jacks, unmediated by the control box, the problems disappear.
