I currently have a intel i--6400 2.7 GHz
and a amd r9 380,

i would like to upgrade my pc but not sure which component to upgrade first.

i would upgrade my cpu to either a AMD RYZEN 5 1600X 6-Core 3.6 GHz or a Intel - Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

and i would upgrade my gpu to a amd 580 (msi or gigabyte)

could some one tell me which i would be better off upgrading and which component to chose

Solution
AFAIK, the i5 6400 is still pretty good. You would be better off upgrading the GPU. IF you upgrade the CPU to an i5 7500:
1. You would need to update the BIOS
2. Makes no sense as with Coffee Lake out it is better to go for CoffeeLake, which would require a new motherboard from the Z370 line.

The Ryzen path will also require a new motherboard from the A320, B350 or X370 line.
