My 280x just got burned. It is still under warranty, I think. Hopefully, it will be a successful claim.

I use my graphic card to do engineering simulation and need a strong double precision performance for calculation. If they cannot fix my 280x, I guess I cannot ask for another 280x since it is a discontinue product. I purchased my card at $230 USD. I don't know much on how warranty works but I think I can have a new ATI card at retail around that price range and I am wiling to add little bit of cash on top to get the right card.

What are the choices for ATI gaming graphic card close to $230 USD price or just slight above with a strong double precision performance?

then i don't think you have anything better to get if you want to use your warranty claim. those Tahiti probably AMD only gaming card with highest DP capability. tahiti DP rate is 1/4 of it's SP rate. but the thing about tahiti is that rate is the same regardless the card being an accelerator card (firepro) or a gaming card (Radeon). Hawaii is one monster DP GPU (even significantly faster than nvidia titan kepler) with it's 1/2 DP rate but that's only available in firepro version. the Radeon version it's DP being limited to 1/8 of it's DP resulting even slower performance than tahiti.

For that much money you can buy two HD 7950's on the used market and get 1.7 GFlops of double precision.

There's nothing in the modern lineup that is going to touch your 7970 at double precision for that price point.

There is nothing in any lineup that touches that generation for double precision, it's not even a contest. It's like comapring a school bus to a mini van for how many people it carries.

The question is, what rate do you need, what can you settle for?
