So right now I have a bit of a tricky situation

I'm running a i7 4790 (non-k) and 8gb ram with a gtx 1080 with a 1440p screen.

I mostly game with a fair bit of editing and streaming.

my ram is running really low being that I like to multitask while i game on my second monitor.

However I'm running this i7 on a dell motherboard that won't take any more ram. I tried upgrading to 16gb but it didn't work. Also, the ssd is on the motherboard and it wont go into another one. So If i were to stay with this cpu, i would have to buy new ram, motherboard, and ssd. All to be on an outdated architecture.

The ryzen 5 1600 caught my eye as a nice budget option to get me on a new platform. Also, it allows me to easily get 16 gb of ram. Of course. This means I have to get the cpu, mother board and ram and ssd. I would have to blow all my money from christmas on this upgrade.

Here in canada this upgrade with taxes would be about 800 bucks. Is it worth it? I'm not concerned about the new ryzen chips coming out. But ram prices are extremely inflated right now. Should I do this upgrade?

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 3200 or Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 is about as cheap at 2x8GB as you are going to get unless you want to go for slower RAM which Ryzen doesn't work well with. You could save $50 going to cheap 2133MHz Crucial RAM but I really don't recommend it. Buying RAM hurts right now as it's so inflated.

Can you show a pictire of the ssd? You sure it's not just msata or m.2 connections?
A 1600 is not that big of an upgrade really.

Going from a i7 4790 to Ryzen 5 1600 isn't worth it IMO. You only get a couple more cores and under 10% more performance in addition to the costs of moving to AM4 (New RAM, CPU, motherboard, SSD if you can't get that one out although Dell are known to be jerks with their proprietary stuff)

If you were upgrading for a multitasking system I'd recommend at least Ryzen 1700 or 1800. Avoid the X models because they aren't worth it. If you could afford to do a build like:

Ryzen 1700 or 1800
Whatever AM4 board that isn't complete garbage even though a garbage AM4 board is still better than anything Dell gives you
2x16GB RAM kit 3200MHz ideal Ryzen and slow RAM do not go well together!
New case/possibly a new PSU if you cant salvage the Dell one. Again Dell LOVES proprietary stuff that can't be replaced.

Then I would just upgrade.

Otherwise I would just sit on the current setup maybe half a yeah until RAM prices come down and the new Ryzens come out.

Ok so i think the ssd is like an m.2, my gpu is covering it so i cant show a picture.I know its not an nvme, more like a square shaped thingy. Also its only 120gb, so even if it were to work would it be worth keeping?

Over the last few days shortly after upgrading to 1440p. My computer is unusable when launching/playing/exiting a game. If I watch a youtube video while gaming my fps is in the 30's and I experience MAJOR stuttering. Its pretty unbearable, and its because of the ram I'm 99% sure.

Oh yeah sorry I forgot to mention this. My system is in a nzxt s340 with an evga power supply. So the cost of those would be negated.

On the topic of the ryzen 7 1700, I don't think i can really afford it. My plan with the ryzen 5 1600 was to buy that, and if the new ryzens are really that good, i can just upgrade the cpu down the line.

Anyway my original plan was this

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (maybe ryzen 7 1700 if needed)
MOBO: Gigbyte AB350 Gaming 3
RAM: Pretty much anything above 2666mhz probably corsair vengeance, i trust them the most.

If I went to ryzen 7 would should I buy a x370 mobo? In this case the upgrade would be wayyy to picey for my tastes.

I appreciate all of your quick responses BTW, glad to see such a helpful community!

If you aren't literally running out of RAM (check task manager) then the RAM isn't the problem. If you are actually running out of RAN then it is the problem and I'd consider just going to Ryzen 5 1600 if your board won't let you upgrade. It's a better workstation chip than a 4790 regardless.

Going up to 1440p display is more of a GPU reliant upgrade than anything.

Ryzen 5 1600 is more of a smaller upgrade than most would like coming from devils canyon in gaming but a big one in multitasking. It would get you on to a new good platform though and get you off Dell. AB350 if fine as long as you don't want to overclock.

Yeah that will kill you if your RAM is that maxed out. I'd just go up to Ryzen 1600 considering that just to get out from under Dell's oppression. I misread somewhere I thought you had 16GB. Does that Dell board seriously limit you to 8GB? That is awful.

You can overclock on b350 but not heavily. The VRMs aren't good enough. For most people b350 is just fine.

Ok guys, thanks a lot for your suggestions, especially jr9 for the extra advice.

I'm gonna pull the trigger tomorrow, getting...

Ryzen 5 1600
Gigabyte Ab350 Gaming 3
275gb crucial mx 300 ssd
16gb ram (i dunno yet what brand)

I'm probably gonna start a new thread for ram, but if any of you could offer suggestions for ryzen ddr4 ram ( i don't wanna overpay for gskill Flare X) that would be appreciated =)

Happy new year 2018 everyone!
