I'm building a new PC to replace my current 5-year-old rig.

How much more performance should I see upgrading from a Core i7 3770K to a Core i7 8700K?

What about in games?

the difference are not just in cpu power but the motherboards that comes with it,
raw power comparison is simple.... almost twice the power in an 8700K over the 3700k cpu

The number of PCIE Lanes have more than doubled between the z77 motherboard has 8, the z370 24 pcie lanes. and that means more data process and means faster speeds https://ark.intel.com/compare/125903,64024

Also the z77 board has a bus speed of 5GB/s the z370 board has a bus speed of 8GB/s again speed up those 16 extra lane it has along the way.

Here is what Intel says.

The 8700K has two extra cores, can handle 4 more threads, has ~1GHz more speed, along with 4 generations of core improvements. (some of which I admit are sub 10% compared to previous gen.) Considering the extra cores and clock speed, the 8700K is a much better CPU.

That being said these are K CPUs. the 2500K could hit 5GHz easy, with higher being possible. From what I've seen, 7 and 8 series tend to top out around the same speed. At this point the clock speeds are more or less the same. The difference would be the per core improvements which have happened over the years. (From what I've seen, there are no real changes in IPC from 7 to 8 series. 8's are better because they have more cores.) Overclocked to ~5Ghz, I would think there would be a difference in performance of around 25-35%. If the task can make use of all the cores in the 8 series, you'd see a much larger change. Same if you had both at stock and the 8700K had that extra 1GHz depending on boost.

i7 3770K is 4c/8t and 8700K is 6c/12r. Base clock and turbo clock are higher for 8700K and its IPC is also better. You need to download MSI Afterburner and monitor your usage of CPU/GPU/RAM. It will help you to decide whether you need to upgrade or not.

Well....

That will depend mostly on what games you play and what graphics card you are using.

There will be some Core difference in performance and it will be noticeable, how much will depend on the above. There will also be a platform difference and DDR4 memory.

Bottom line here is are you ready to upgrade NOW, if so then go for it, if not and you want to keep the PC for awhile longer then that's fine also.
