hard drive problem

Hello, ive got two hard drives, both recognised by windows harddrive manager.

but when i use a 3rd party partition software, the harddrive with the operating system is seen as unallocated, any way to fix this ? i want to do more partitioning, but the windows built in partition software is limited and won't let me make the c:drive any smaller than 1/2 a terrabyte, ive got windows 8, sometimes ive had to start the computer a couple of times due to the operating system harddrive not being recognised, seems it gets lost from the bios as well sometimes..

ive swapped the sata cables over between the two harddrives, makes no difference, the harddrive with windows on it is the only one affected.

thanks everyone, problems now solved, it was as simple as using the partition recovery section in minitool partition wizard, after it scanned the drive, it actually showed the partitions before i applied the command to make it happen, so i applied it and it wiped out the windows as well, so put windows back on again, installed the minitool partition wizard, all partitions on both drives were present, i don't know what was wrong with it in the first place, but whatever it was it also blinded the bios a few times from seeing the harddrive.

can you share us a screenshot ofyour disk management? it will give us a clearer picture on your situation. first-off you have to convert your disk into GPT. it has no partitioning limits like the MBR. you can do that easily with the disk managment tool you have.

Oh, wow. This is a perfect example of when it's time to back everything up, wipe, partition and format everything, and start over with a fresh install of the OS and all relevant applications.

thanks for your reply, not sure on what the drive is or about the limit thing, but the windows partition manager gave a notice about immovable sectors, i really dont think that should be a problem. heres a screenshot from a couple of months ago, it looks slightly different to things now though.

been using these disks for a couple of years, trouble only started a couple of months ago.

there are many causes why your drive appears as unallocated tho. file system error (hence the brute force way clean windows install should fix that). your power/data plugs are lose somehow to your sata drive causing bad operations on the disk. virus attack. your SATA controller driver is outdated.

have you tried updating your sata controller at least from your motherboards support site. also updated your BIOS to the latest? you are using windows 8.0 x64 right?
