I am fairly happy with my current build, but I very much enjoy building tinkering and overclocking, and I would like to make the move to 6 core 12 thread in the near future. I still can't entirely justify putting my first CPU on the shelf yet, but it is being surpassed by current i5's and I am noticing odd stutters and frame drops, so I think the time is near.

i7 3820 @ 4.625 (hyper 212 lol)
Asrock Extreme 4-m
16gb 1600 ddr3
EVGA sc black 1080ti
750w evga g3
250gb 840 evo
2tb hdd

Your Monitor Resolution: 2560x1440 165hz

Additional Comments: I have no problems running most of my games over 100 fps on ultra, but my framerate will spike down fast if i am trying to stream or do multiple tasks, i'm often hitting 100% load on all cores. I can't decide if I should simply spend 200 or 300 dollars on a 4930k or 4960x because I have the motherboard or keep saving for coffee lake/Ice lake.

If I get a new 8700k I will have to delid it, because I will be pushing it as far as I safely can, plus new ddr4 and a motherboard and that cost quickly becomes 2x or 3x the price of just going to an older gen 6 core. Not to mention I would have my 3820 ready to slap in when i overclock the solder off that baby.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, im always learning and this has been my only pc.

Hey,

Keep saving for coffeelake or Icelake processors.

I don’t think that getting i7 4960 will give u massive improvement over your current processor.

However getting a 8700k with ddr4 ram and new mobo will give you massive improvement over your current setup.

So save for coffeelake/icelake.

i have corsair h55 liquid cooler which i got 3 years ago.
my gpu is 1070ti which is slightly lower than yours.
