Hi,

so, a bit of background info:
I was given an old HP Compaq 8200 Elite CMT PC (Intel core i5-2500 CPU) from work as they are re-equipping with newer models and scrapping the old ones.
One of the IT guys kindly put an officially licensed version of Windows 7 on the PC and ran the free Win 10 upgrade for me last week.

After lugging the machine home, I wanted to make a system backup DVD in case things went wrong (I have a tendency to lose USB sticks, sadly).

This is when I noticed the DVD drive was missing from the devices listed.
I have run through all of the suggestions on the Microsoft page re missing devices after update, but to no avail.(going into regedit and deleting upper/lower values (this was not an issue), going into device manager and deinstalling the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, etc., etc.).

After much research, I wondered if the DVD drive was connected to a SATA port that had been disabled.
I had a look in the BIOS and could only see one Port, i.e. Port 0 to which my 500 GB HDD is connected, nothing else.

There are three or four SATA ports when I look in the PC casing and the DVD drive is connected up correctly (power cable and SATA cable).
I have also tried disconnecting the DVD drive, booting up and then switching off and reconnecting it all up in the hope the computer will miraculously recognise the DVD drive.

As the computer was a hand-me-down, I don't know if our IT guys disabled the SATA ports, so we couldn't use the DVD drive at work, or if was never set correctly (??).

Sorry, I probably haven't explained things very well and am happy to provide more info. It is a steep learning curve, as until this weekend, I had never opened up a PC to have a look at its insides.

In summary, I can't see any of the SATA ports beside 0 in the BIOS, and I suspect this is my problem. (I want to install an additional HDD later down the line and I suspect if I can't resolve this issue, I can't install it on one of the other SATA ports).

Any help would be really, really appreciated!

Thanks

HB

Solution
I would try updating the bios to the latest version from HP Support.

You should download THIS technical guide for your model. It does say that all models support at least two storage devices including optical drives. It also has information on how to update your bios in chapter 8.
