Keyboard and mouse not recognized after restoring an image on new hardware.

Hi, I've got an almost 15 year old XP machine at work with some specialist software on that I don't have a backup of so i'm trying to make a clone of the whole machine in case it fails.

I created an image of the machine using Clonezilla then restored it on a different machine then used Hiren's BootCD to fix the hard disk controller. I can now boot the machine up and it's seemingly running fine other than the USB mouse and keyboard not being recognized (after boot, they work fine in bios or in Hiren's boot CV).

Anyone know what causes this? Will I need to install some kind of USB drivers, and if so can i do it without a keyboard and mouse.

you can try going to your motherboards support site and download and reinstall all the drivers there. you can start with the chipset driver.

if it doesnt work, you will need to reinstall winxp with your drive attached to your new motherboard.

i highly advise against this but if you really insist in using your old windows with your new motherboard without reinstall, you will need to prepare this USB tool from this site below. this will allow you to install basic/specific motherboard drivers to your windows pre-boot. the instructions in the site is very straight forward. however, this is not a guarantee your system will work 100%. but at least, this will make your keyboard and mouse work. there are ways to "fix" a old windows to work...

I thought that, and the machine i'm moving to does have the ports, but don't have a PS2 mouse/keyboard hanging around. I guess the next step is to find a set, seems like it's worth a try.

if your new motherboard has a Skylake processor and above, this will only support windows 10. it will not work with older versions of windows.

Thanks. i'll give it a try. It's an oldish PC i'm transferring it over to anyway so not too worried about hardware compatibility (the software is to control a piece or industrial equipment and runs over a serial port so had to get a pretty old replacement machine anyway). That tool does sound like the kind of thing i need since i cant do anything after it boots at the moment.
