So I recently upgraded my motherboard to an Asus Z270H, my CPU to a i5-7600K and my ram to 2x4gb 2666mhz ballisticX ram. When I go into my system config to check my CPU, RAM etc it shows that I only have 4gb of RAM available to use. Please help, I tried to change slots, made sure that all the RAM was sitting in properly but it still does not work.. Please help!

Specs:

MB: Asus Strix Z270H Gaming
GPU: Asus Strix 960 4gb
RAM: 2x4GB 2600Mhz BallisticX
Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU Fan
2x Corsair HD120 LED Fans connected to a corsair fan hub

Solution
Double-check memory insertion, power connections (both 24-pin and 8-pin).

While you may not want to hear it, memory issues like yours are often the result of bent pins in the CPU socket. You may need to completely disassemble your system to check for this possibility and then carefully re-assemble to isolate the problem (to verify the issue being the memory stick(s) or the motherboard memory slot).

Ok, try to use one stick of RAM (that you know that works) in the slot the "bad" one isn't working. This will test to see if that slot is just bad or not. if it does work then there could be a problem with the "bad" RAM then. make sure you press the ram all the way down in their slots. Keep testing out the Ram to figure out if they are bad or not.

The thing is, I don't know which slot is the "bad" one.

BIOS? I have 64x windows installed, although after I installed my new motherboard it said that I had to "get a legitimate copy of windows 10" can that be a part of the issue?

Just test out each slot. pick a random stick, take the other one out and put that one stick in one slot. Turn on PC, make sure it reads it. turn off pc and try different slot. Do this with the other stick of RAM as well.

How come? I'm using the same OS & HDD as I was before, I don't own an SSD so that can't be the problem either. And sometimes my computer behaves strangely, Like when I tried switching RAM slots and booting up my PC. It wouldn't boot

You really need to do a clean installation of Windows when you switch motherboards. The chipset drivers for your old motherboard are imbedded into your operating system. After doing a clean installation of Windows, then load the chipset drivers from the CD-rom that came with your motherboard, or download them from the motherboard's website.

The HDD has always been in this system

This is going in circles. First, power the system completely down and disconnect the power cable. Make sure both memory modules are fully inserted into the slots. One confirmed, reconnect the power cable and power on.

Press F2 or DEL to access your BIOS. There you can see how much memory the motherboard recognizes.

What are the results?

By the way, you need to get a legit Windows license it seems.

But you changed the mobo and CPU which are NEW

If you upgraded the mobo and CPU then what was the hdd connected to before?

If it wasnt connected to this system (you pulled it out of the old system - and you didnt install windows on the hdd, while it was connected to this system), then you should do a clean install

The hdd isnt the prob. It's whether you did a clean install of Windows, when you upgraded the mobo and the CPU

Did you check the fit of the memory as I previously suggested? This:

First, power the system completely down and disconnect the power cable. Make sure both memory modules are fully inserted into the slots. One confirmed, reconnect the power cable and power on.

Press F2 or DEL to access your BIOS. There you can see how much memory the motherboard recognizes.

What are the results?

By the way, you need to get a legit Windows license it seems.

Yes, if by fit you mean seeing so that the ram is not loose and is sitting properly

Download and run memtest. See here:

http://www.memtest.org/

Download the ISO and burn to disk (or USB drive with a tool like Rufus). Boot from that drive. Run the tests. You may have a defective memory stick or slot. Memtest will help isolate it quickly.

You can also do a sort of test yourself, by installing only a single stick of memory into the primary memory slot, just one at a time, the determine if one is bad.

BTW...any time you work on the innards of your system, make sure all power sources are disconnected and that you also ground yourself to prevent static discharge.

Well, tha's funny you mention it. A person who helped me install my new components told me the fan should be facing upwards... Aswell as the heatsink, and I haven't found it if my MOBO is the issue or the RAM

Upwards is acceptable as well (most orient the other way) as long as you have good airflow.
